Bio:

Prof. Marianna Tryfonidou leads the Regenerative Orthopedics group, which is a multidisciplinary and international research team embedded within the department of Clinical Sciences at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht University, the Netherlands. The group focuses on osteoarthritis and low back pain due to intervertebral disc degeneration with a clear focus on clinical translation. The research follows the One Health-One Medicine principle and aims to make an impact on the health of animals and human patients with low back pain and knee joint pain.

Abstract:

During her lecture Prof. Tryfonidou will be presenting work conducted within the H2020 iPSpine project, where we focus on differentiating induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) into notochordal cells, the cells that reside in juvenile discs. These iPS-NCs, combined with smart biomaterial, are geared to rejuvenate the degenerate disc. Studies in preclinical testing platforms culminated in a proof-of-concept studies in large animal models which will be highlighted during the lecture.

Host: Prof. Dr. Benjamin Gantenbein, Tissue Engineering for Orthopedics and Mechano Biology, Bone & Joint Program, Department for BioMedical Research and Department for Orthopedics and Traumatology, Insel University Hospital, University of Bern.

The DBMR Research Conference takes place from 5 pm – 6 pm.
