Ongoing Projects

Liver regeneration: We are studying hepatocyte proliferation at the level of replication fork progression, as well as the influence of DNA damage and replication stress in young, aged and diseased regenerating livers (Ainhoa Asensio Aldave, PhD student and Adrian Keogh). Early events in liver regeneration are investigated using single cell RNA sequencing (Daniel Sánchez Taltavull).

Function of PCSK9 in the liver: Understanding the intracellular role of PCSK9 in hepatocytes and cholangiocytes of normal and diseased conditions. (Ainhoa Asensio Aldave, PhD student and Yuting Ma, PhD student).

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH): characterizes the Mc4r MASH mouse model elucidating its similarities to the human disease, with a special focus on the inflammatory liver landscape (Fabienne Birrer, PhD student).

Cholangiopathies: Validate a new drug for the treatment of cholestatic liver disease (Felix Baier, He Liu, PhD student and Corina Krummenacher). The role of tight junction proteins in IBD-PSC disorder and liver metabolism (Teresa De Enrique Schmidt, PhD student). The influence of biliary bacteria on peribiliary immunity and their influence on chronic diseases of the biliary tree (Sarah Peisl, MD-PhD student).

Hepatocellular carcinoma: Development and validation of an innovative liver cancer-specific immunotherapy (Dr. Nicolas Melin and Mengru Yu, PhD student).

3D spheroid-based platform for long-term phenotype maintenance of hepatocytes and high-throughput analysis of liver-stage malaria infection in both mice and humans (Dr. Keely Keller).

Mathematical modelling of metabolism and within-host parasite dynamics (Dr. Jonathan Hamley).

Imaging mass cytometry (IMC): support the IMC Platform by collaborating in IMC and sMC studies and providing expertise in all project stages, from cell staining to data analysis (Dr. Tess Brodie and Dr. Tural Yarahmadov).
